click to enlarge view St Gregory’s began as a mission to Queens University students, in the home of the Zion family. On growing, it also met in a chapel at the University. Later, it became a house-church, then moved to a store-front in a strip-mall, and thereafter, at the invitation of the Anglican parish (which had built a new building), moved into the basement of their old historic stone church in Cataraqui Cemetery where the first Prime Minister of Canada is buried. After spending two decades in the Anglican basement, on June 15, 2022, the former Methodist/United church building across the road was purchased by St. Gregory's parish (965 Sydenham Road).  It became the new and permanent home of St. Gregory of Nyssa Orthodox Church.  An antique iconostasis was donated and installed in June of 2022, and the first Divine Liturgy in the new location was held on June 26, 2022.
click to enlarge view St Gregory’s, as is the case with many Orthodox Churches in North America, follows the New Calendar. The parish serves according to the Typikon (usages) of the Russian Orthodox Church, with a smattering of Byzantine elements from our Hieromonk of Athonite education, with all services being in the English language.  There is a small amount of Slavonic, Greek, Malayalam, French and Hungarian used from time to time.  Membership of the parish presents a wide range of national backgrounds, with members from North America, Russia, the Balkans, the Middle East and India. Further, there are a growing number of people who have entered into Holy Orthodoxy from outside the Orthodox Church.
